for the record

i do not believe things happen for a reason, and i will kinda not so secretly judge you if you do.

also, you should feel free to judge me for not knowing how to capitalize or use symbols on my allegedly smart phone, and for blogging this from said phone.

  1. Again. I am in total agreement. It drives me nuts when some crappy thing happens and everyone just says it happened for a reason.

No. It didn't. It happened because life sucks sometimes.

  2. I HATE that, and in fact recently blogged about something related. Any time I don't get a job, the same people keep telling me that it's happening for a reason, and that it'll happen when the time is right. The time is right now!

  3. And I should probably also add that it goes both ways - I don't think that when good things happen, they happened for a reason.

To paraphrase Watchmen (which in turn was paraphrasing the Bible) it rains on the just and the unjust alike. No one deserves their good or bad luck. That's why it's called luck.

  4. I hate when people say that too. It's just like, ISH HAPPENS. Not everything has to happen for a reason.

  5. Agreed. I think a lot of things have eventual reasons as they play out, but dang, not all of them. Otherwise, I need to figure out what it is that I did to deserve some of the crap that's happened in my life (I'm sure I'm not the only one).

  7. Go ahead and judge. I still think that at least some things really do happen for a reason.

  8. Sarah - thanks, I appreciate it. :)

Brooke - don't worry, it's only a tiny bit of judgment. And it's coming from someone who can't capitalize on her phone. :)

  10. I'm going to be the annoyingly technical comment jerk here and say that sometimes I agree things happen for a reason. Meaning, I think things don't "just happen" not in the "it's the plan" sense. Here's how I break it down. A flower grows or dies because I water it or don't, or it's gets sun or whatever. So there's a reason. (actually, I pretty much kill any plants, so we'll try another example) And people*** are sometimes blindsidedly dumped, angry/hurt and confused because some doucebag can't get their shit together. . .or someone*** rear ends the poor soul ahead of them because they drive too fast and too close. All reasons.
That being said, "everything happens for a reason" is not a comforting phrase. It should not be used as such. Yes, there is cause and effect. DUH. Sometimes, the reason is just because one is in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time. Still a reason. But not nearly as sunshiney and sickeningly optimistic as the typical "everything happens for a reason." May as well just add "keep the faith, sister" to that one. . .

***Any similarities to persons, real or fictional, in merely a coincidence. Total coincidence.

  11. And...seriously, Google, who comes up with these "words" we have to type. Whoever they are, may they have mercy on any opponents during Scrabble.
